While Mauritius is undoubtedly beautiful above the water, some of my most memorable experiences have been out at sea.
The island offers wonderful opportunities for snorkelling, with its clear lagoon waters and fascinating marine life. One particularly special moment was swimming in the sea as a pod of dolphins moved beneath me. It was an extraordinary experience and one that has stayed with me.
For anyone considering a marine wildlife excursion, I would always recommend choosing a responsible, licensed operator that follows local wildlife protection guidance and allows animals to behave naturally.
Whether you are an enthusiastic snorkeller or simply want to experience the island from a different perspective, exploring Mauritius by water can add something truly special to your holiday.
Hiking Le Morne Mountain
Mauritius is not just about relaxing on the beach. Its dramatic mountain scenery offers another side to the island, and hiking Le Morne Mountain was a real highlight of my trip.
The panoramic views from the hike were spectacular, looking out across the surrounding landscape and the Indian Ocean. It was a wonderful reminder of how much there is to discover beyond the resorts.
For travellers who enjoy getting outdoors and incorporating a little adventure into their holiday, exploring the island’s natural scenery can be a rewarding addition to a luxury escape.
As with any mountain hike, it is important to check the route, conditions and suitability for your fitness level before setting out, ideally with an appropriate local guide.
The flavours and culture of Mauritius
Another highlight of Mauritius is its food. The island’s diverse cultural influences come together in its cuisine, creating an appealing mix of flavours and culinary traditions.
From exquisite dining experiences at the resorts to discovering local dishes, food can be an important part of getting to know the destination. Warm hospitality is another part of the experience that I particularly remember, with the welcome we received adding to the feeling of being somewhere special.
I also enjoyed visiting Port Louis, the island’s capital, where shopping offered a different pace from the relaxed resort surroundings. Exploring the city is a great way to experience another side of Mauritius, with its lively waterfront, markets and blend of cultures.
For me, these experiences are what make a destination memorable: not just where you stay, but the people you meet, the places you explore and the moments you experience along the way.
